Magazine cover analysis 2

Main image: The main image takes up most of the front page which makes it stand out to the audience. The head goes behind the title of the magazine as opposed to some other magazines where the picture goes in front of the title.

Title: The picture is a bright red which can connote blood and anger. It takes up the whole of the top part of the magazine and is a well known horror magazine

Colours: The magazine mainly stick to red white and yellow for the colours. There is a small bit of orange at the top and the background is black. Using less colours makes it more simplistic and doesn't cause the magazine to look crowded and tacky with colours

Headings: The main heading is at the bottom of the page and is significantly bigger than the other headings, this is to attract the audiences attention to the main heading before the sub headings. The sub headings are at the side in much smaller text

Magazine cover analysis 1

Main Image: The image takes up most of the front page so it is noticed immediately. The Jokers head obstructs the magazine title but it is a well known magazine so it doesn't matter. The picture is just one image with text written onto it as opposed to an image photoshopped onto a background

Title: The title is bright red which makes it stand out to the audience. It is obstructed by the picture but 'Empire' is a well known magazine so the audience still knows the identity of the magazine.

Colours: The colours of the text match the colours of The Joker. In doing this it is ensured that there are not too many different colours on the page as you should stick to 3 or 4 for the whole magazine.

Headings: The heading for the main article is bigger than the headings for the secondary articles. The text for the heading of the main article is also the only one with a different font to highlight that it is the main article and grab the audiences attention

Film review 2 (Tucker and Dale vs Evil)

Director: Eli Craig

Brief Plot Outline: Two hillbillys go to their vacation cabin in the middle of the woods at the same time that teenagers are camping there. Due to a series of hilarious misunderstandings, the teenagers think Tucker and Dale are serial killers and keep killing themselves while trying to rescue their friend

Which two scenes impressed you the most, why?
The scenes where Tucker is throwing wood into a woodchipper and the teenager goes to jump at him but lands in the wood chipper instead, impressed me due to the gore effect. I liked the red squirting out and I thought that the prop half a body looked impressive. I also liked the scene where Dale first tries to talk to the teenagers due to it being a parody of a typical horror scene with a killer talking to the victims

How has watching this film helped you understand the genre of filmmaking?
This film has helped me understand how to make a successful horror comedy. It manages to be funny while still sticking to some regular horror conventions that are both played straight and subverted. If I were to put some comedic elements in my trailer, then this film would help me with that

Which aspects of the film would you like to include in your own trailer?
I like some of the gore effects that are used in the film. Due to my trailer being a gory horror film I could learn a lot from watching this and apply the techniques used in this film into my own.

What aspects of the film would you like to avoid in your own trailer?
I would tone down the comedy slightly for my trailer and focus on the horror nd gore

How does the film show influence of its auteur?
The director has not made many over films and so can not really be described as an auteur

Stereotypical horror fan

This is an insight into what a stereotypical horror fan of the gory genre would look like. A person named John, 24 years old working at his local music shop. Known for playing the guitar and playing Football. His favourite horror film would be the Human Centipede. He is a fan of the mainstream horror films and would fit into the C1 category when looking at his social class. Overall, he is a mainstreamer.
He is the kind of guy who enjoys going out with friends to their local Pub, but would also like to sit around and play Video Games. Studied Media Studies at College and passed with a B having a knowledge of the subject. Used to Microvwave dinners to save time cooking, generally laid back and lazy person.

From doing this exercise, I've now got a better idea at the kind of person that I am aiming the chosen trailer at. This lets me know their interests in the film, best places to advertise when pinpointing this certain group and what they would want in the trailer in ways of Gore.

Film Review 1 (Cabin in the Woods)

Director: Drew Goddard

Brief Plot Outline: Five teenagers take a vacation to a cabin in the woods. They are used as stereotypical rituals in what is typically a horror film. Things don't go according to plan and the ritual fails, causing the end of the world.

Which two scenes impressed you the most, why?
The scenes in which chemicals are used to alter the behaviour of the victims into characters typical of a horror movie- The jock, the stone, the slut, the bookworm and the virgin/final girl. I also liked the scene where all the movie monsters escaped such as the clown, which seems to be inspired by characters like Pennywise. Fornicus, lord of bondage and pain who is a parody of Pinhead from Hellraiser and the giant octopus who seems to be inspired by The Kraken

How has watching this film helped you understand the genre of filmmaking?
This film is different to conventional horror films as it is a deconstruction of the whole genre. It knows the conventions and tropes of horror and creates them in its own universe. The characters personality are even changed so that they reflect typical horror movie characters.

Which aspects of the film would you like to include in your own trailer?
Even though the film deconstructs the genre of horror with its story and characters, the cinematography and mise en scene are very typical of horror films and could be used in my trailer.

What aspects of the film would you like to avoid in your own trailer?
I would avoid the parody and deconstruction and stick to a more basic plot

What was the best moment in the film?
Its hard to pick a single moment as the film was absolutely brilliant. For me it was thr monsters rampaging in the lab, my favourite one being the clown. I could not recreate this due to budget

How does the film show influence of its auteur?
The film is produce by Joss Whedon who is known for catering to die hard fans of certain things. In this case it is horror movie fans. The whole movie shows the horror genre in its entirety. Joss Whedons other films and tv shows include The Avengers, Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse

Shrooms (Paddy Beathnach 2008)

This poster is very simplistic yet I find it very well made. There are no people, no action and no indication of what is going to happen in the film.Creating a skull out of mushrooms and the moon is a very cool image and is something memorable that sticks in the brain. I prefer this poster to other posters that simply show the people or events happening. The job of the movie poster is to attract the audiences attention and make them want to find out more and I think that this poster achieves that perfectly.

Smiley (Michael J Gallagher 2002)

The poster look like a convention horror movie poster. The people assembled at the front look like various horror characters such as the final girl and the female victim. We also have the killer towering above them giving him a position of power. It gives off the feel that the killer is watching them without them being able to see them. I like that this poster shows the killer and sticks to the usual conventions of a horror movie poster. I dislike that the poster hasn't tried to do anything exciting. Its very plain and only features characters staring at you awkwardly.

30 Days of Night (Action Horror 2007)

What Happens in the Trailer?
The trailer shows highlights from the film and lots of vampires.

Positive Aspects
Unlike most horror trailers, this one actually starts off with a jump scare which subverts the normal convention of finishing with one. The use of animated text in the trailer looks well made. There is also some restricted narration used, which is a good movie technique

Negative Aspects
The trailer is a bit slow for an action horror film which can be off putting for fans of the genre. You would aspect an action horror trailer to have a lot of action in it due to that being one of the main features of the genre. There is also a lot of fade to black and dissolve used in the trailer which gets boring. Some different effects needs to be used in order to add some variety

My Score
8

Class Score
7

Evil Dead (Gory Horror 2013)

What Happened in the Trailer?
The trailer shows some scenes from the film featuring deadites, survivors and some remade iconic scenes.

Positive Aspects
Theres a nice build-up to the action with some slow scenes at the beginning before getting progressively quicker and more full of action. A good amount of gore is also used thanks to it being a red band trailer. Theres an especially gory scene where somebody pushes a nail into their eye. This works well as a trailer and gives a perfect feel to as what the film will be about. If you enjoyed the trailer then you will definitely enjoy the film.

Negative Aspects
The only negative aspect is that it was too gory for some of the girls due to gory horror being more loved by the male demographic

My Score
9

Class Score
8

Pusher Trilogy (Crime Thriller 2005) Class Trailer Reviews

What happened in the trailer?
The trailer shows various shots from the movies, primarily featuring violence and drugs

Positive, Clever and Interesting Aspects
The trailer manages to show the essence of what the film is about without actually spoiling any of the main plot points. A lot of flaws in movie trailers come from the fact that the trailers will always spoil the plot in some way. A successful trailer can show the viewer exactly what is going to happen in the film without actually showing it happening. This trailer manages to achieve just that.

Unsuccessful Aspects
The trailer has a bombardment of images that move quite fast. This can be a bit too much to try and focus on and is the only real negative aspect of the trailer.

My Mark
8

Trailers Average Score in Class
The trailer received a 6 due to being too fast moving for a lot of people

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon ( Scott Glosserman 2006) Solo Trailer Review 3

Brief Outline of the Trailer: We are built up to the intoduction of Leslie by the trailer mentioning characters like Freddy and Jason. We are then introduced to Leslie talking about how hard it is to maintain the regular conventions of a psycho killer and talking the audience through other things. Some more characters are introduced and lots of scenes of people screaming are shown.
Positive Aspects: The trailer gives a feel for what the film is about, with the deconstruction and parody of the horror genre. It shows some of the highlights without spoiling anything, which is unusually good for a modern trailer.
Negative Aspects: I think the trailer makes it look a bit more like a generic and conventional horror film than it actually is. Other than that its a very good trailer
Total Score: 9

Dog Soldiers (Neil Marshall 2002) Solo Trailer Analysis 2

Brief outline of the trailer: A voiceover tells us a bit about the film and the critical reception it has received. We are treated to some shots of soldiers preparing to fight werewolves but only one werewolf is actually seen briefly.
Positive Aspects: The trailer makes the film look like an enjoyable thing to watch. It introduces what the plot is about without spoiling any important parts for the viewer.
Negative Aspects: The voiceover is cheesy and the text in the middle of the screen distracts from what is going on. The scenes from the trailer make it look like more of a comedy film than a horror one.
Total Score: 6
